This is a trip report, as written by a participant, an initiate into the ways of suzuki madness (new Jimmny). Remember, you don't have to be mad to buy one, but it'll come...

We arrived. We unpacked. Just kidding!!

Another successful year for Duncan and the crew from BORC who organised the Show n Shine at Cleveland showgrounds on Sunday Feb 24th.

Also a winner for us, with Nev and the big XB taking home a runners up trophy on Elvira’s first outing after her latest rebirth.

Idle Engines Ain’t The Devils Work

Little while back, the dear light of my life decided the old ‘lux (2003 model? OLD?) had to go as it just couldn’t be modified for play and she wanted more seating capacity. After a bit of looking around and a little bit of pressure from myself, she picked up a Suzuki XL7, the stretch limo of the Vitara range.

Uni Blues

Tough Tracks kicked off the year with a blast out at Janowen Hills on the weekend. Everyone had a ball, there were roll overs and tough competition, ribbing and help on tap, by all accounts.

See, I wasn’t there.

Elmo Cam

While the Tony Hawk Helmet Cam was a cheap buy, it gave cheap results. After looking at a number of high end cameras, and gagging on the price of most of them, we settled on the Elmo SUV Cam.

Nothing ticklish, or furry, about this little piece of technology. But it's just as cute. Well, as cute as a micro video camera can be.

Under Pressure

Over the course of the year, we've had a number of tyre changes and with it better performance both by Pinball and ourselves overall. But in each case, we were able to get just that little bit more from the tyres by the obligatory reduction in tyre pressure.

Of course, to do that you need some way to measure the pressure. Although we already had a tyre gauge, one of the prizes we won this year was able to make things a little easier... the ARB E-Z Tyre Deflator.

Thanks to Control Synergy, InfoWave have done a spotlight on our use of the in-car navigation and computer system. Go check it out at along with some of the other tracking and computing solutions they offer.

Hopping Mad

The ride home in Pinball from Tough Tracks 3 at Janowen Hills was slow and interesting. Apart from a minor rescue from the top of the Gap of a gentleman who had an alternator bolt shear (blind hole) stranding he and his young lass, poor old Pinball had a hellish case of the death wobbles.

After dropping our polo mate (who had been caught up in the horse flu outbreak) home, we limped the old girl back to my place, swapped out the tires and found the problem.

MX Talons with Vibra Gel

Back in June of 2007 the Safety Institute of Australia held a conference and trade show in Brisbane at Southbank, naturally I attended in my "professional" role.

While browsing through the trade show I found a few interesting things, including some for play. Hopefully I’ll be able to run a review of Victor footwears new Mongrel zip side boot soon (it’s just been released) but meanwhile I’ve managed to lay my hands on some gear from XAX designs out of Melbourne.

The first thing to catch my eye was their MX Talon range of gloves, particularly the Vibra Gel models, designed to reduce the incidence of numbness and tingling in the hands after long exposure to a situation requiring a heavy hand and lotsa shake such as hammer drills.

Tough Tracks 2007 - Round 3

It's been a while since I've competed. A baby daughter being the root cause. But I managed to get a leave pass for what was a thoroughly enjoyable weekend (ok, it's been a while).

During round 1, we had some... traction problems. We borrowed some tyres after stage 1 and performed a lot better. Well, round 3 followed a similar script.

Firstly, thank everyone for your warm welcome to P'n'S.

I have just put new Boots on the Foz, so I hope to run it in the next event that has an unmodified catagory.

Let me know and we will be there.

As printed in the Cars Guide of the Courier Mail on Wednesday September 12th 2007.

Interesting to note the importers lament over the loss of the Sierra from the line up, maybe he should go shopping in Thailand...

Research into Ergonomics of Competitive Driving

Well i thought it'd never happen, but my day job is managing to wind its way into my funtime.

As part of my ongoing professional development i am in a position of having to do a research paper in ergonomics, so i figured i'd try and make it fun and useful at the same time.

Tough Track Challenge Rules Changes

From the Tough Tracks 4x4 Club Inc. committee.

Dear Competitor,

Please be advised that we have recently reviewed and updated the Tough Track Challenge Rules and all rule changes are effective immediately.

The Tough Tracks Committee deemed these changes necessary and of an urgent nature due to increasing insurance premiums and heightening environmental and safety concerns at events.

Hello, RACQ?

Anyone else made this call, sitting on the side of the road at Taringa, 1800 on a Wednesday night and I’d just managed to drive the old girl up the gutter on the starter motor.

Reckon I would’ve done something about sorting out the fuel gauge after near on 10 years wouldn’t you.

So what’s the issue?

The Virgin Navvy….

Words by Robert Hill
Pics by Michael Kane

We arrived Saturday morning at the CityView campgrounds, in a heavy mist, only to be told that the Roll Cage was not bolted in yet. This, I found out, was due to it needing to be straightened after a previous event accident. Now did I mention I was a newby to this kind of stuff, so finding this out after I agreed to be the navvy for this event, didn’t really instill me with great confidence in the driver…

Yeah yeah, forget it… I was never that good looking for it to be worthwhile…

However, the LED lighting on the car, now that’s seeexxyyy, apart from the epilepsy triggering flash rate, so this is the simple fix.

Why do we do it?

It’s a question I get asked often enough, why do I feel the need to jump in a car, go out into the bush and drive into places where I’m likely to break it… the car that is.

I reckon this is a viable answer…

City View Trials 2007 - Round 1	(24 February 2007)

Sadly Az was not available this weekend due to work commitments (price of being overly competent I guess) but Sylvester gamely put on his brave face and agreed to navvy for me, as long as he didn’t have to ride the rock with me!

A Chance to get Involved

Posted on behalf of Peter, and many other organisers who rely on volunteer help for events.

I have spoken recently to a few other 4x4 Competition / Event organisers. It has been agreed that having a list of people from all around S/E QLD who were keen to volunteer their time , efforts and skills when available to help run these comps/events would be greatly beneficial. I have taken it upon myself to make a start on this list.
